Defender of the Imperium contains the novels Death or Glory, Duty Calls and Cain's Last Stand, plus the short story Traitor's Gambit and a new introduction from author Sandy Mitchell. Imperium: (clockwise) Star Destroyer TIE/D Defender TIE/IN Interceptor TIE/sa Bomber (surface assault), space and planetary bomber. Death or Glory, Duty Calls and Cain's Last Stand (Defender of the Imperium omnibus). Their abilities give them a bit of extra survivability and hitting power: this is excellent if you want a Striker with a bit of Defender, or Defender with a bit of Striker. Once you read Hero of the Imperium and want to continue on with Cain's adventures, the next omnibus, Defender of the Imperium, is a good place to start. Overall, pretty good, although not really my cup of tea. To parry, the defender needs to roll less than or equal to his or her shield skill or weapon parry (which is equal to half the weapon skill plus the weapon's parry modifier). RoleMaster, SpaceMaster and the sadly half-forgotten Middle Earth Role-Playing (as well as Justifiers and other, more obscure games) use a similar system, but in Fantasy Imperium, the straight roll is considered to be the Characteristic value. If there is a hell, Obama will be roasting alongside of Reagan, Woodrow Wilson and every other able bodied defender of the imperium.
